Firstly I must admit to being a little bit nervous upon entering the dojo on my first ‘Kumite Grading'. Its not everyday you have eight karate-ka looking to ‘Help You' through this testing time. I had practiced my Techniques and Kata day in and day out during the previous weeks, until I was performing them in my sleep. But it was more about the mental pressure in keeping a level head up to and during the fighting.
The Kumite seemed to come and go in the blink of an eye and now I'm wondering what all the fuss was about. It was challenging and rewarding at the same time.
So don't find yourself stressing out over Kumite, but embrace it as another stepping-stone in the never-ending quest, that is the Seido way of Life.

I think it would be fair to say that all of us who were about to attempt the grading that night, which also included Chris, Peter, Richard and Mark, were tense with nerves and in those few moments before the grading had withdrawn into themselves, focussing on what was to become a memorable grading.
The support was clearly evident, not only from other dojos' but also from our family and friends. My parents came, which I was of course pleased about, as they had wanted to see their daughter practising karate after I had often told them about its benefits but I was naturally worried for them as I warned them that they may see me in a different light, exhausted and under pressure! Would they be shocked, find the evening all a bit too much, or would they understand what was being achieved? ........cont.
